Let's stop diabetes together!

2013 Call to CongressI'm sure you don't know, but both my 5 year old daughter and 5 year old niece have type 1 diabetes (the type that is not caused by the foods you eat or being overweight - the kind that you HAVE to take shots).  It is a very life changing disease.  My tiny girls have to be poked to check their blood sugar at least 5 (usually much more) times a day and get shots of insulin at least 4 times a day, or anytime they eat any food with carbohydrates in it.  When we go out to eat we often have to guess the carbohydrates in the food they eat because restaurants rarely have the nutrition information.  Camps and preschools don't know how to deal with diabetes and won't except the girls & they can't have sleep overs or go to their friends houses. Please help by sending a letter to congress to help stop diabetes.  It's a simple letter, already written for you (there is a place to add your own personal letter, but you don't have to).  Please take 2 minutes to help stop diabetes and help Naomi and Sadi.

(Please use the link below to write a letter to congress)

Mashed Bananas

My local Kroger sells bags of bruised fruit for very cheap so recently my Mom picked me up a bag of 15 bananas for $1.29.  There was no way we were going to eat 15 bruised bananas before they went bad so I decided I would make banana bread.  Well, I didn't really feel like making banana bread at the time so I mashed the bananas up and froze them for future use.  I didn't want them to do to waste!

So I used my Kitchen Aid mixer (the best present EVER!) to mash the bananas up for me.

Then I spooned have of the bananas in one bag and the other half in another bag.

Then I labeled them with the date and stuck them in the freezer.  Now I will have bananas anytime I need ripe mashed bananas.

Don't forget to compost your peels!

What do you like to do with your extra ripe bananas?

Laundry Detergent

Remember the soap we made recently?  Well, now it's time to make the soap into laundry detergent.  While I wouldn't recomend using the soap to wash with because it would be to soft, it's perfectly okay to use in our laundry detergent.  So grab a couple of bars of your soap and let's get going!

First you need to gather your ingredients:

Washing Soda
Baking Soda
Borax
Soap

...and we will need a container to keep the detergent in and either a food processor and a cheese grater.

1) Pour all of your ingredients except soap into the container.

2) Cut up your bars of soap into cubes (or use your cheese grater to grate the soap - omit steps 2 - 4)

3) Add your cubes to your food processer.

4) Chop up your soap into small peices.

5) Add your soap to your other ingredients in the container.

6) Now mix all of your ingredients.  I used my hands so I could break up any chunks I might come across.

All finished!  Wasn't that easy (and cheap)  This will last you a while, you only need a couple tablespoons per load.  To treat stains, rub a little soap on the stain and throw in the wash as usual.

More uses for homemade laundry detergent:

- Disolve 4-5 tablespoon in a spray bottle for houshole cleaner.

- Disolve 4 - 5 tablespoons in a gallon of water for mopping.

- Sprinkle in the toilet for toilet bowl cleaner

- Use to clean counter, tub, sinks, etc.

Are there any other ways you use your laundry detergent?

My new Kitchen Compost

I've been wanting to get something to keep my kitchen scraps in until I could take them outside but I could never justify spending the money.  We were using a large pickle jar with the lid but it was so nasty!  You could see all of your kitchen scraps sitting around and looking nasty, and the smell when we opened it was enough to clear the room.  So, my reasons for getting my compost bin?

1) I wanted one
2) Tax money

That's pretty much it.  We could have continued using the pickle jar and save the $19.99, but I saw it at Target, had just gotten our tax money, and I've been wanting it.  I am very happy about it.  It's pretty and doesn't smell :-)

I picked up and extra set of charcoal filters (2 for $4.99).  They each last about 6 months, so I have a year and a half of charcoal filters.

I got lucky, while I was shopping at a bargain/outlet type of store I came across these compost bags.  They were only $2.00!  The only thing that was wrong was a crunched box.  The same bags sell for $5.99 at our Kroger.

They fit perfectly!

Well, I'm off to play with my girls.  We're heading to the park today.  Spring is on the way!

Do you have a kitchen compost bin?  How do you like it?

Don't Compost those Veggies Scraps Yet!!!!

Hey, don't throw those vegetables in the compost just yet!  Use those veggies to make fresh, homemade, and almost free vegetable broth.  It's so easy you'll wonder why you've never done it before.  Mostly it's just a lot of waiting.  Waiting to get enough vegetables, waiting for the broth to simmer, well, I guess that's all the waiting.  Alright, let's get started!

First of all, start by saving all of your vegetable scraps...
...and put them in a bag in the freezer until your have a full baggie.
Now that you've gotten a full bag of frozen vegetables, pour them in a pot and fill the water to just above the veggies.  Add some garlic and some bay leaves.
Now bring them to a boil, then simmer covered for several hours.
They will really cook down and smell DELICIOUS!!!
Now it's time to drain the broth.  You can drain 2 times if you'd like, once through the colander and another time through a cheese cloth.  I usually just skip the second draining though because I don't mind the tiny pieces of vegetables still in my broth.  After all, it is vegetable broth!
Here are our drained vegetables...
...and here is our finished broth - DELICIOUS!
Now you can take those vegetables and add them to your compost.

I hope this will help you make your own broth. Let me know how you like it!

**do not use to many broccoli scraps, they do not make good broth at all, and it smells horrible simmering all day!
